Coconut Mocha Frappe

Today, I’ve got a coconut mocha frappe recipe and a story about a Fair Trade farmer, his Fair Trade ingredients, and a huge giveaway of, you guessed it, fair trade goodies!

Coconut Mocha Frappe 01

Today I want to introduce you to Olga by sharing her story, what she does, and how the Fair Trade movement has made her life 100% better!

Olga Quevedo Castro, 36, from Imuris, Sonora, has been working for four years at Wholesum Harvest and is currently the supervisor for the nursery and primary school that cares for children of employees. Olga is also the president of the ten-person Fair Trade council, an assembly of employees elected by employees who lead decision-making processes concerning the use of funds allocated by Fair Trade USA for all workers.

“There are absolutely no negatives from the Fair Trade program as all the extra earnings only benefit the workers.” – Olga

Today, thanks to the power of Fair Trade, I’m sharing with you her story and how you can help by just purchasing Fair Trade products like your daily coffee, your kid’s chocolate snacks, and more!

When I created this recipe, I thought about Olga working in Mexico and all I wanted to do was call her up and invite her over to drink this Coconut Mocha Frappe. I’d describe it to her in Spanish – “Es una batida a base de leche de coco, chocolate, canela, hielo – es bien refrescante en las trades calientes!”

Thanks to the great sponsors, this drink was so refreshing and delicious, unlike anything else. Please do show some support to our sponsors by clicking on their site and discovering their awesome products! And be sure to scroll all the way down and enter this awesome giveaway!

Equator Coffees & Teas (@equatorcoffees) A complex blend of flavors, the Mocha Java hails tastes from Ecuador, Ethiopia and Sumatra. With flavors of aged wood, fruit, bittersweet chocolate and spice, this aromatic Fair Trade Certified coffee blend will unfold more and more with each sip. Now get brewin’!

Lake Champlain Unsweetened Cocoa (@LCChocolates): Create your next kitchen masterpiece with this organic, Fair Trade Certified cocoa! Ideal for baking brownies and cakes, cooking up molés, and concocting delicious hot chocolate. It was even named best Dutch-process cocoa by Real Simple!

Dang Foods (@DangFoods) Many cultures around the world have been enjoying coconuts for generations. These crunchy toasted coconut chips are coated with Fair Trade Certified dark chocolate – making them the perfect snack that provides loads of energy! Grab a handful and try them out – we’re sure you’ll be thinking Dang that’s good!

Frontier Natural Products Co-op (@FrontierCoop) This Fair Trade Certified, organic Ceylon cinnamon, also known as “true cinnamon,” has a subtly more delicate and sweet flavor than the more common cassia cinnamon. Use to flavor cookies, cakes, stewed fruits, puddings, and breads – as well as curries, sauces, and vegetable dishes. The cooking possibilities are endless!

I would like to buy more fair trade products but the stores in my town barely have any organic products, much less a focus on fair trade. I do try to buy direct as much as possible at the farmers markets or straight from local ranches.

I always look for fair trade coffee (and chocolate) products. Fair Trade really is a community effort and has a positive impact on the community where goods are coming from. It also aids in sustainability and improves the lives of producers. I tend to buy fair trade coffee at Trader Joes because I think they have the best quality for the price. However, a local coffee shop where I live (Boston), JP Licks, offers great Fair Trade (and organic) coffee at a slightly higher price.

I love the Larabar bars! Being in the middle of a cornfield makes it a bit harder to get fair trade products, but having a child that majored in this type of thing means that I’m on the lookout for them, though! We’re getting there!
