Waking up doesn’t come easy, not when it’s 30 degrees outside and so comfortable and warm inside! After days of planning to wake up early and not doing it, today was the day to rise and shine. What was the motivation? Breakfast at The Art Cliff Diner in Vineyard Haven. Art Cliff is a local diner that has breakfast, lunch and dinner (depending on the season, and this week will be its last week until the Spring) and offers great food. Breakfasts are my favorite because of their daily specials and use of local ingredients.
We decided for the Eggs Benedict (because we have to test out every one we see!). Who doesn’t love a perfectly runny egg over Canadian bacon and a toasted English muffin, drowned in Hollandaise? WE DO! M. asked for local eggs instead of regular eggs and they were served alongside Hash Browns. A very satisfying way to start the day!
I order the “Bayou Bundle”. Great breakfast but here’s my issue: menu descriptions. I don’t mind simple ones, but this one just conjured in my mind a “burrito style” wrap, after emphasizing the flour tortillas and avocado “salsa”. You’ll see the picture below, it was two flat flour tortillas filled more like a “torta” than a bundle with scrambled eggs, cheese and topped with two Chorizo links. A serving of chopped UNRIPE avocado and fresh tomatoes rounded out the bundle. Why would you serve unripe avocados? Just substitute them, use something-anything-else. The menu described it as a salsa, but a salsa it wasn’t. I’ll agree, I ate half my plate but still I just wasn’t very happy with it. Or maybe I just really wanted M.’s Eggs Benedict?
One thing I was extremely happy about was the Homemade Hot Cocoa that was listed as their drink special. Hot Cocoa with the highest mountain of whipped cream, overflowing with goodness. Loved it! Our server was probably the nicest, more helpful waitress I have ever encountered. Her smile was a great breakfast addition.
If you have a chance to visit Art Cliff, do it! Support local restaurants and order local, SEASONAL ingredients whenever you have the chance. Enjoy the breakfast pictures and tomorrow morning, make something special and delicious to start your weekend!
