When was the last time you called your Mom? Oh, you haven’t called her this week? Go on, call her now, this blog post can wait. And when I mean Mom, I mean any special female role model in your life: an aunt, a grandmother, a sister. With Mother’s Day this week (May 12th) and World Fair Trade Day today (May 11th), I wanted to showcase an organization I’m loving lately: Fair Trade Certified and “Moms Make A World Of Difference”, their program showcasing mothers from around the world in cacao farms, coffee and sugar plantations, and other sites where these hardworking women are making their jobs their life, not for them, but for their children’s future.

 

Mothers in Latin America, the Philippines, and other countries are harvesting fair trade coffee, cacao, sugar, flowers, and tea. They’re working hard and getting paid fair prices for their work. Because that’s what fair trade narrows down to. Simply put, fair trade products are products in which the farmers/producers of the raw product have been paid fair market prices for it. When buying fair trade certified products, you’re buying products that improve lives, are of great quality, and protect the environment. The quickest and easiest way to start supporting the fair trade movement? Thanks to the folks over at Fair Trade USA for sending these fair trade goodies in the mail, and thanks to them, I’ve discovered my current obsession: Dark Coconut Toffee Organic Chocolate by Alter Eco.
