My friend Nelly Rodriguez, who kindly invited me to guest post, has witnessed it herself. The way my family gets together just because, no matter the day to just eat, drink and laugh. Nelly calls it “Los Sandovales” way. It’s just how we are, and it’s why I love testing, making and drinking new spirits, beers, and anything mixology oriented (plus I have the excuse that I’m a cook too!) I have to be honest, the love for drinks, cocktails and food runs in my family. When we get together we just go all the way, we get all the drinks out and food, well that’s a no-brainer.

So when Marnely asked me to write a guest post about a spirit or cocktail, it quickly became a series of posts instead of just one.  Every Thursday during the month of September, I’m going to bring you a cocktail with a different spirit.

To start off, and because summer is still not over in the Dominican Republic, we are talking and mixing RUM. We Dominicans are very proud of our rum. We have always had two of best rums in the world, Brugal and Barcelo Rum made and bottled in Dominican Republic.

Rum is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from sugar cane juice or other sugar by-products such as molasses. There are two basic types of rum:

  • White Rum: a clear, dry rum normally aged less than a year;
  • Dark Rum: caramel colored and strong, sweet flavor that can be aged 5 or more years

Our cocktail today is the perfect end of summer drink: refreshing, sweet, full of deliciousness but most importantly perfect for that last trip to the beach to soak up the sun.

We are making a drink inspired by Mixologist Todd Trasher’s Carrot Colada, who has created drinks for The Majestic, one of my favorite places in Virginia and that as myself, has also worked for Chef Jose Andres.
