Remember that Dominican Product fair I visited a few weeks ago? Well there was an empty stand with a sign for “Kah Kow, the first gourmet Dominican chocolate”. This intrigued me and I had to see where I could purchase it. Luckily, the place where I am currently taking wine classes has them for sale! I immediately bought the four bars offered. The varieties/percentages are: Milk; 55%, 62% and 70% cacao and come in 50 gram bars, distributed by Nazario Rizek C. por A. (Check out their site with information on their Cocoa Farms, Organic Chocolate and Philosophy.)

Packaging is composed of two parts: the bar itself is sealed in a plastic, black material with the name “Kah Kow” stamped across it and this is inserted into a soft, cardboard box. Thin and sleek, the presentation is elegant and minimalistic.

Printed on front: Kah Kow “Redefining Chocolate” and followed by the variety.
Printed on back: a short summary of the origin of the chocolate, flavor notes and ingredients. Also a “Best By: Date” stamp.

The ingredients are fairly simple and are cacao, cocoa butter, vanilla and soy lecithin. You don’t need anything else to elaborate a good chocolate bar! The summary on the back mainly states that the beans are harvested in Duarte, a province in the North of Dominican Republic and is produced in limited series, because the process is “similar to those employed by artisan European chocolatiers of the turn of XIX century and beginnings of the XX century”. Then they go on to describe the flavor profiles of each bar.

In my humble opinion, the bars are well-made. We again have the temper issue, which I’m starting to think is the climate. But I did store them in a cool area before consuming them, so the snap was there. No shine whatsoever though. The flavors? Pretty basic but then again, they are basic bars. The Milk variety had slight undertones of licorice and that was lovely to discover in milk chocolate. They suggest the 55% has tropical fruit flavors and I did sense the acid in it, maybe pineapple? The 62% was used to make Hot Chocolate and it was close to amazing. The milk thickened nicely and you could taste a slight caramel flavor. I definitely enjoyed it. I’m waiting to use the 70% but am excited to try it!
Only negative comment about Kah Kow? Nowhere on their product is their contact information. Not a phone number, website, email, NOTHING. I don’t understand why have a good product and not let your client have any communication with you? Useless. Other than that, I give this bar a 3.5/5. Lacked on shine, had a little snap and the flavors were there. For anyone interested in purchasing them, I bought them at El Catador, Santo Domingo.

  1. Maybe the lack of shine is an organic chocolate thing? I noticed that with one of the bars I bought. The lack of snap seems to be the climate. I don’t know how you feel about this but I like to put my chocolate in the freezer and only eat a little at a time. It helps me conserve and it’s a nice sweet way to cool down.

  2. -Pity, gracias por leerme desde Londres!
-Mela, you are a rock star 🙂
-Junia, I didn’t even realize the vegan-ness of it! That’s even more awesome! These are great cause with only 50 gr, you’re not eating sooo much 😉

  4. I definitely love your judgment. I don’t know this kah kow bars yet but will buy it soon because I’ve been to rizek cocoa farm and tried their organic chocolate and it’s amazing, hope the bars taste the same.

  5. tiene buena pinta, me encanta el chocolate, pero el negro, mi favorito, si cae en mis manos lo pruebo seguro! saludos desde londres

  6. Aubs, maybe? But not so sure, I think a company should fully stand behind their product and offer some contact information. I had to Google and Facebook search for a while before finding anything!

  7. maybe the lack of contact info builds the intrigue/exclusiveness of the bar? Interested to hear how to 70% tastes!
